The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest covers 18 counties in northern Georgia. It was established as a national park in 1936, and the U.S. government first purchased forest land here in 1911. The name was taken from the Native American tribes who originally inhabited the area. Chatta means stone and ho chee means marked or flowered.
