Helen, Georgia is rich in historical sites and landmarks.

One landmark that cannot be missed is approximately two miles south of Helen in the form of the Romeo and Juliet Indian Mound Tragedy SiteMountain Cabin Rentals.  According to legend Saute, an Indian brave of the Chickasaw Tribe fell in love with Nacoochee, the daughter of the Cherokee Chief.  When they confronted the chief about creating peace between the two tribes he ordered Sautee thrown from the high cliffs of Yonah Mountain as Nacoochee watched. She promptly broke away from her father to leap from the cliff after Saute. The remorseful chief buried the lovers in a burial mound near the Chattahoochee River.

The Nacoochee Valley Marker was erected by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in 1980 and details some of the rich history and natural resources of the Valley of the Evening Star which still attracts travelers, writers, and artists.  The valley was farmed for centuries by Indians and white settlers before being devastated by timbermen and gold seekers.
